How to choose the best life jacket for your baby

The most important feature is safety.
The most important safety consideration is to wear the life jacket.

One common problem, usually discovered when you are on your boating trip, is that babies don’t like to wear a life jacket. It is something strange to them and they may cry a lot. Parents can make the mistake of removing the life jacket if this happens. This is the most common safety risk..

Babies cry for many reasons, but the most common cause is comfort. If you buy an uncomfortable PFD, you endanger your infants safety because you may decide to remove the life jacket if the baby throws a fit. Another consideration is the foam inside the vest. Cheaper life jackets are usually found in big box stores such as C___, W___, or K__, (cant say the names but you know who I am talking about). Some of these may have a good name brand logo, but that makes no difference if they use an EVA foam that is hard and stiff. Sometimes you can feel the beveled or rounded edges underneath the material. Even if the life jacket has an exterior soft neoprene, the hard foam defeats the purpose of comfort. Cheap EVA foam is not comfortable. This material jeopardizes safety if the baby wont wear it. Always buy a life jacket that is super soft Neoprene, filled with soft buoyant foam, with the same soft foam in the head pillow. These will cost more, but what is more important, safety or saving a few dollars on a life jacket?

Or 25 years of experience in watersports allows us to bring to you the best life jackets, super soft, high quality, safe, and having the same soft foam and neoprene material in the head pillow.

These Baby Life Jackets by Kidder, Hyperlite and Evolution are the best quality you will find for your infant. They have a head pillow, crotch strap, and are much softer than nylon life jackets. These vests have wide arm holes, super soft neoprene fabric, and soft buoyant foam inside which eliminates any irritation to the skin.

Infant Life Jacket Happy Baby

Think safety when you put your little one in a baby life jacket. These toddler life vests are made of a soft neoprene material and are U. S. Coast Guard Approved. Super soft neoprene feels like cotton and will be more comfortable on an infant, thus you will have a better chance of putting on this infant PFD without a lot of crying.

This is a TYPE II Life Jacket which is the type that keeps the infants head above water. See the attached type chart for various types of life jackets. U.S. Coast Guard Approved Type II. This type of infant personal flotation device complies with state and federal boating laws regarding boating with an infant or any other other activity in the water.

By law, toddlers are required to wear a Type II life jacket. The coast guard says not to strap a baby into a car seat of any other restraint device in a boat because it will be impossible to get out if the boat flips or fills gets swamped with water. Babies should not depend on swim diapers or other non USCGA flotation devices. Infants must have a type II life jacket.

Neoprene Life Jackets MUST fit snug when dry because they will stretch when wet! If it is too loose, it will not keep you safe and provide any security while in the water.

When deciding on a Life Jacket for yourself, loved one or friend finding the right fit is essential. Most newer Life Jackets are designed to have wide arm holes for freedom of movement while water skiing, tubing, wakeboarding, canoeing. kayaking, or any active watersport. Even though this area is generally loose the life jacket should always fit snug around your body if you want it to remain effective and still be used as a personal flotation device. Life Jacket's are cut specifically for men or women and sizing is generally based on your chest measurement.

When buying a Life Jacket make sure that it is USCG (United States Coast Guard) approved, if it is not, it could have the potential to fail. When buying a Jacket the size of the vest goes by your weight and chest size. Most manufacturers indicate the recommended weight range for their vests.
